FOXY IDEA FOR CULLING PESTS: Firearms are an important tool to many Australians, including farmers, park rangers, security personnel, vets, the Department of Primary Industries, the Australian Defence Force and police officers. This is the first year the FoxStop program has offered firearms as a reward, along with other prizes such as DVDs, cars and camping equipment. The purpose of the prizes is to encourage licensed firearm holders in Victoria to help cull the fox population, a growing environmental problem. This program has destroyed more than 17,000 foxes that would have killed approximately 100,000 native critters each day. Winners of the firearms will also be subject to police checks. Farmers in Australia have complained that getting a firearm licence is becoming increasingly difficult. The reality is that, despite strict requirements for licensed firearms owners, some people cannot handle the thought of anyone owning a firearm, even if it is legally obtained and used for legitimate purposes.
