TEAM CSSA E-NEWS - FEBRUARY 24, 2011
CSSA BACK AT THE U.N. AGAIN: The CSSA's Tony Bernardo will be back at the United Nations again during the week of February 28, 2011 to discuss the Arms Trade Treaty. The CSSA is committed to assuring the operating definition of small arms does not include those used by civilians. Anti-gun Non-Governmental Organizations have pushed for this as a method of inflicting more gun control on civilian populations, despite overwhelming evidence that military inventories are where more controls are required. We'll keep you posted.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST: A Detroit man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for trying to smuggle guns into Canada, the Detroit Free Press is reporting. Terrance Coles, 25, was sentenced Tuesday after a federal jury found him guilty last July of several crimes, including conspiracy to deal in firearms without a licence, being a felon in possession of a firearm and attempted possession with intent to distribute ecstasy. Court heard that in 2008, Coles sold 35 firearms to people he believed were ecstasy dealers, but who were actually undercover agents with Toronto Police. Coles was arrested in a Detroit sting. M.P. HOEPPNER CONTINUES ANTI-REGISTRY CRUSADE: The fight to kill Canada's long gun registry has far from subsided since a bill seeking the registry's end was defeated by just two votes in the House of Commons in the fall. Candice Hoeppner, a Conservative MP from Manitoba, presented the keynote speech at the Royal Canadian Legion in Windsor Feb. 16 during an anti-long gun registry rally hosted by the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers & Hunters. Standing before about 200 people, Hoeppner described herself as a fiscal Conservative who views the long gun registry as a waste of tax dollars. She said the registry is unnecessary legislation that harasses law-abiding citizens. "Criminals aren't registering their guns," said Hoeppner, earning a round of applause. Hoeppner said the 15-year-old registry reinforces a misconception that all long gun owners should be considered suspect. Hoeppner said another piece of legislation aiming for the abolition of the long gun registry will be introduced following the next federal election. (The Hants Journal – February 22, 2011)

ATF LINKED TO AGENT'S MURDER: An operation run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) known as Project Gunrunner has been implicated, albeit indirectly so far, in the December 2010 murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry by alleged bandits in Arizona, reports the president of the Law Enforcement Officers Advocates Council Andy Ramirez in a new piece for the Liberty News Network. Now, Agent Terry’s family wants answers and the Justice Department is apparently engaged in what critics are calling a “cover up.” In documents obtained by The New American magazine and Liberty News Network, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) asked the Department of Justice to respond to some of the shocking allegations originally shared with the Senate Judiciary Committee by ATF whistleblowers. They accused the agency of knowingly allowing straw buyers to purchase the weapons — even “sanctioning” the gun sales — which were then allegedly used in Agent Terry’s killing.
-------
IMPORTANT – POST 2 - SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR IAN THOMSON: CSSA members are encouraged to attend a rally of support for Ian Thomson on March 2 at 9 a.m. in Welland ON. Mr. Thomson (of Welland) was recently charged with numerous firearms offences when he defended himself again three masked men throwing Molotov cocktails at his home and dog house. While Mr. Thomson was not injured, one of his dogs suffered burns. CSSA General Counsel and noted firearms lawyer Edward L. Burlew LL.B., is defending Thomson. If you feel Canadians must be allowed to protect their own safety and property without being forced to defend themselves against criminal charges, come and show your support. The rally will be held at the Welland Court House, 102 East Main Street, Welland, Ontario L3B 3W6 and all caring citizens are encouraged to participate.
-------
BLOOMBERG BILLBOARD BLINDED BY THE LIGHT: New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is sending a moving billboard truck around the country claiming that 34 Americans are “murdered with guns everyday.” The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms says the mayor is selectively ignoring the hundreds of lives saved everyday because guns were there when needed. CCRKBA chairman Alan Gottlieb, citing research that places the number of lives saved annually with firearms at between 800,000 and 2.5 million -- frequently without a shot even being fired – said that translates to “lives being saved that Bloomberg chooses to ignore... violent crime has declined during the same period when gun ownership in the country has skyrocketed, and the number of Americans legally licensed to carry concealed handguns has risen dramatically. Today, more than 6.2 million private citizens are legally carrying in more than 40 states and yet, according to FBI data, violent crime has decreased.” (Business Wire – February 17, 2011)
